Hepatitis C

Nearly three million Americans have hepatitis C. But 70 to 80 percent of them don’t even know it because they have no symptoms. The hepatitis C virus attacks the liver, but research has found that chronic untreated hepatitis C patients have a higher rate of autoimmune thyroid dysfunction, suggesting that when the virus is active, it can trigger your immune system to attack your thyroid.

Unfortunately, hepatitis C patients who have been treated also have high rates of autoimmune thyroid disease. That’s because interferon—the primary treatment—is an antiviral drug that can suppress your immune system, sometimes with the result of triggering autoimmune conditions. So both the virus and its treatment are potential risk factors.
